Mahendra Kapoor passes away

Another great performer passes away this weekend. Mahendra Kapoor never reached the fame of Mohd Rafi or Mukesh in his time, but he has sung some gems of hindi music. His rendering of Ravi’s songs and Sahir Ludhianvi’s lyrics are unforgettable. He has sung two of my all-time favourites in Hindi cinema

1. Chalo ek baar phir se ajnabi ban jaaye hum dono – A song penned by Sahir supposedly when he saw his former love at a party and had to be distant again in behaviour. Used in the movie Gumraah. You can hear it here. http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/hindi_bollywood/s/movie_name.796/singer.85/

2. Tum agar saath dene ka vaada karo – One of the most beautiful love songs in hindi cinema from the movie Humraaz. You can hear it here. http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/hindi_bollywood/s/movie_name.828/singer.85/

These songs belong to an age in Indian cinema when lyrics were as important as the melody. Sahir Ludhianvi, who wrote both these songs, is one of the greatest hindi film lyricists. He interweaved poetry into hindi cinema songs. I am posting links to the lyrics here as well. You can read it in english or the original hindi.
